Alabama State University received a 3-year  grant from the DOD for Advanced Materials research.

 

Materials Grant Will Fund Research and Provide Scholarships

Alabama State University received a three-year $600,000 grant from the Department of Defense (DOD) for “Lightweight Multifunctional Advanced Materials” research. The research will be geared toward developing next-generation science and technology for Air Force systems and advanced aircraft such as the F-35, which require lightweight, durable and multifunctional materials. 

Professor Derrick Dean, PhD, Biomedical Engineering and Director of the Integrated Bioengineering and Advanced Materials Center, will serve as principal investigator and Elijah Nyairo, instructor of chemistry, will serve as co-principal investigator.

According to Dean in an ASU news release, the project will greatly assist the U.S. Air Force in accomplishing its strategic research, educational and manpower development goals.

“The grant will help develop the research capacity and infrastructure of ASU in an area of strategic value and importance to the Air Force and significantly leverage ASU’s facilities to produce innovative, multifunctional, and multiscale materials,” said Dean in the release. “It also will train and develop students prepared to become DOD scientists.”

The project will provide scholarships for up to four ROTC students, who will be exposed to cutting-edge research and provide a pipeline of scientists and engineers prepared to immediately contribute to helping the Air Force and DOD in the future.
